Seattle-based band tours Cincinnati!

The Seattle-based Hejira is a genre-bending world music duo. Their sound can be described as a hybrid, combining ancient world styles, global rhythms and exotic scales with modern instrumentation. Musical interplay and improvisation are central to their performances.

After Cincinnati native Don Baragiano - who attended the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music - made his migration to Seattle in 2001, he formed Hejira. Then in 2005 he met Ashraf Hakim at a gathering of Middle-Eastern musicians. Hakim had just moved to Seattle, having spent 16 years as the first chair cellist for the Cairo Opera House in Cairo, Egypt. Over time the dynamics of the group shifted, and Hejira was pared down to just Baragiano and Hakim, whose collaboration and interplay had become the core spirit of the group.

Featured Band

Hejira

Don Baragiano originally formed Hejira in 2001, shortly after moving to Seattle.  The band grew and morphed until at one time it included six musicians. Once Don met Ashraf in 2005, the dynamics of the group shifted, and eventually Hejira was pared down to just the two, whose collaboration and interplay had become the core spirit of the group.

Their synergy is evident in the effortless way they produce rich, vibrant music with only a few instruments.

They have been invited to play at a number of world music and international culture festivals, and have performed for audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest, as well as New York, Arizona and the Midwest.

Don and Ashraf enjoy a shared love of music and a strong bond of friendship. They strive to bring the same to their audiences.

Just as Hejira's sounds and influences are diverse, so are the the two artist who make up the group: Don Baragiano and Ashraf Hakim.
